Spotlight '26: Summer Block Party

Step into the summer of ’77 and dance the night away.

Each summer, Mountain Theatre Company gathers its community for SPOTLIGHT, our signature fundraising event and the largest celebration of the season. In recent years, we intentionally moved away from the traditional gala model—formal dinners and silent auctions that often felt predictable and disconnected from the spirit of live theatre. Instead, SPOTLIGHT has evolved into an immersive themed celebration that invites our patrons to step directly into the world of the season’s storytelling. This year, the evening draws its inspiration from our world-premiere musical Dancin’ in the Street, transforming the event into a vibrant summer block party inspired by the music and culture of the late 1970s.

The evening begins at sunset in The Lounge, a relaxed and stylish cocktail gathering where guests ease into the celebration. Warm lighting and shimmering disco balls catch the fading daylight while local guitarist Mick performs soulful instrumental favorites from the era, filling the space with the sounds of classic groove and funk interpreted through his guitar. Guests mingle with signature cocktails in hand—such as the sparkling Disco Ball Spritz, a bright blend of gin, elderflower, lemon, and prosecco, and the tropical Boogie Nights Margarita, featuring tequila, mango, and lime with a hint of chili salt. Passed hors d’oeuvres circulate through the room, offering elegant bites that feel summery and festive: mini crab cakes with lemon aioli, prosciutto-wrapped melon, caprese skewers with basil oil, and delicate tuna crisps. The atmosphere is relaxed and sophisticated, the perfect start to a summer evening of celebration.

As the night unfolds, guests are drawn toward the heart of the party: The Soul Street Party, where the evening expands into a lively block-party atmosphere inspired by the neighborhood celebrations that defined the music of the era. Under strands of glowing string lights, food stations invite guests to explore elevated takes on classic backyard favorites. A barbecue station features pulled pork sliders and Carolina-style chicken bites served alongside warm cornbread and honey butter. Nearby, a street corn bar offers elote cups bright with lime, chili, and cotija cheese, while a table of fresh summer salads highlights tomato and peach, cucumber and dill, and watermelon with feta and mint. A Southern snack table rounds out the spread with fried green tomato sliders, deviled eggs, and pimento cheese crostini. Pre-selected Motown and soul favorites fill the air as guests gather around communal tables with cold beers, spiked sweet tea, and hard lemonade in hand, creating the joyful feeling of a neighborhood celebration where music and conversation flow easily.

 

Just as the energy of the evening reaches its peak, the doors open to the final space and Spotlight transforms once again. Guests step into The Disco Floor, a dazzling dance party illuminated by shimmering lights and pulsing with the unmistakable beat of the era’s most iconic music. A DJ spins dance hits from beloved artists of the time—Donna Summer, the Bee Gees, Earth, Wind & Fire, and more—while surprise moments throughout the night feature live performances from the cast of Dancin’ in the Street, bringing the music of the show to life among the crowd as patrons dance the night away. Signature drinks keep the celebration flowing, including the vibrant Last Dance Martini with vodka, passionfruit, and vanilla, alongside a refreshing batch cocktail known as Disco Punch, blending rum, citrus, pineapple, and sparkling wine. As the party continues, late-night comfort bites appear to fuel the dance floor: crispy disco fries, mini grilled cheese with tomato soup shooters, chicken and waffle bites, and nostalgic ice cream sandwiches that evoke the carefree joy of summer nights.

 

By the end of the evening, SPOTLIGHT becomes exactly what it is meant to be: more than a fundraiser, but a shared experience that captures the heart of Mountain Theatre Company. What begins as a stylish sunset gathering grows into a vibrant neighborhood celebration and culminates in a full dance party inspired by the music that defined a generation. It is a night that reflects the spirit of Dancin’ in the Street and the community that surrounds our theatre—a joyful reminder that when we gather together in celebration of the arts, the entire town comes alive.
