SPOTLIGHT 26: A Summer Block Party
Step back to the summer of ’77—where the streets come alive and the dance floor never stops.

 

Each summer, Mountain Theatre Company gathers its community for Spotlight, our signature fundraising celebration and the largest event of the season. In recent years, we intentionally moved away from the traditional gala model, formal dinners and silent auctions that often felt predictable and disconnected from the spirit of live theatre. Instead, Spotlight has evolved into something far more aligned with our company’s identity: an immersive, themed celebration that invites patrons to step directly into the world of the season’s storytelling. This year, that world is inspired by our world-premiere musical Dancin’ in the Street, transforming the evening into a vibrant summer block party filled with music, food, and celebration drawn from the culture and energy of the late 1970s.

 

Upon arrival, guests receive an interactive Spotlight bracelet that becomes part of the evening’s experience. Embedded with simple lighting technology, the bracelet serves as both the guest’s admission and a visual guide through the night’s three immersive environments. As the celebration unfolds, subtle color changes signal the transition from The Sunset Lounge to The Soul Street Party and ultimately to Avenue 54, helping guests move naturally through each phase of the event.

 

When the theatre doors open and the celebration shifts onto the stage, the bracelets become part of the spectacle itself. As the music begins and the dance floor comes alive, the bracelets illuminate and pulse in sync with the lighting design, transforming the audience into part of the visual energy of Avenue 54. What begins as a simple point of entry becomes an interactive element of the party, surrounding the dance floor with hundreds of points of light as guests dance the night away on the set of Dancin’ in the Street.

 

The evening begins in The Sunset Lounge, hosted in the banquet hall and boardroom at the Martin Lipscomb Theatre. Here, guests are welcomed into a relaxed cocktail lounge atmosphere as the sun begins to set. Warm lighting, shimmering disco balls, and comfortable lounge seating create the feeling of an elegant rooftop gathering from another era. Local guitarist Mick provides the evening’s soundtrack with soulful instrumental interpretations of classic grooves from the period, setting the tone for a stylish and welcoming start to the night. As guests mingle, passed hors d’oeuvres circulate through the room; mini crab cakes with lemon aioli, prosciutto-wrapped melon, caprese skewers with basil oil, and delicate tuna crisps, paired with signature cocktails such as the sparkling Disco Ball Spritz, a refreshing blend of gin, elderflower, lemon, and prosecco, and the tropical Boogie Nights Margarita, featuring tequila, mango, lime, and a hint of chili salt.

 

As the evening continues, the interactive bracelets guide guests toward the heart of the celebration: The Soul Street Party, taking place across the HPAC’s combined lobby spaces and courtyard. Under strands of glowing café lights, the atmosphere transforms into a lively neighborhood block party inspired by the soulful community gatherings that defined the music of the era. Guests explore a collection of chef-curated food stations offering elevated takes on classic backyard favorites; pulled pork sliders and Carolina-style barbecue chicken bites served alongside warm cornbread with honey butter, bright elote street corn cups topped with lime and cotija cheese, and fresh summer salads featuring tomato and peach, cucumber and dill, and watermelon with feta and mint. A Southern snack table rounds out the spread with fried green tomato sliders, deviled eggs, and pimento cheese crostini. Pre-selected Motown and soul favorites fill the air while guests gather at communal high top tables with cold beers, spiked sweet tea, and hard lemonade, creating the joyful feeling of a neighborhood celebration where conversation flows easily and the energy of the evening continues to build.

 

Then, as the night reaches its peak, guests are invited to the final destination of the evening. The theatre doors open and patrons step inside to discover Avenue 54, where the stage of Dancin’ in the Street has been transformed into a dazzling disco dance floor. Colored lighting washes across the set, disco balls shimmer overhead, and the pulse of the era’s most iconic music fills the theatre. Guests are welcomed onto the stage itself as the set becomes the dance floor and the party moves fully into the theatre.

 

Throughout the evening, a DJ spins the unforgettable dance hits of the late ’70s from beloved artists such as Donna Summer, Bee Gees, and Earth, Wind & Fire, while surprise live vocal moments from the cast of Dancin’ in the Street bring the music of the show to life among the crowd. Signature drinks continue to flow, including the vibrant Last Dance Martini with vodka, passionfruit, and vanilla, alongside a refreshing Disco Punch blending rum, citrus, pineapple, and sparkling wine. As the celebration continues late into the evening, nostalgic comfort bites appear to fuel the dance floor; crispy disco fries, mini grilled cheese with tomato soup shooters, chicken and waffle bites, and sweet treats that capture the carefree joy of summer nights.

 

By the end of the evening, Spotlight becomes exactly what it is meant to be: more than a fundraiser, but a shared experience that celebrates the artists, the music, and the community that make Mountain Theatre Company possible. What begins as a sunset cocktail gathering grows into a vibrant street party and culminates with patrons dancing the night away together on Avenue 54.

Each admission includes the full Spotlight experience: an interactive event bracelet granting access to The Sunset Lounge, The Soul Street Party, and Avenue 54, along with an all-inclusive evening of curated cuisine, signature cocktails, premium beverages, and world-class entertainment throughout the event.

For patrons who wish to deepen their support and enjoy a more exclusive experience, I would like to suggest a VIP Admission tier:

VIP guests receive reserved premium seating for the live performance moments on Avenue 54, ensuring a comfortable vantage point when members of the Dancin’ in the Street cast bring the music of the show to life throughout the evening.

During the celebration, VIP patrons are also invited to participate in a private backstage tour hosted by Scott Daniel alongside members of the Dancin’ in the Street company, offering an intimate behind-the-scenes look at the world-premiere production that inspired the evening’s celebration. As part of this experience, guests will enjoy a complimentary glass of Prosecco served exclusively during the tour, creating a moment of elevated hospitality while exploring the scenic elements, stagecraft, and creative world of the production from behind the curtain.

VIP guests will also receive a Spotlight-exclusive commemorative gift as a token of appreciation for their support of Mountain Theatre Company and the artists who bring each season to life.
