Updated: Feb 22

MTC’s 2024 Mainstage Season: A Season of Escape

I am overjoyed to finally be able to share our 86th season with all of you! Show selection for this season began back in March of 2023, and since receiving the licenses to produce this amazing 2024 lineup, I have struggled to keep the secret. My creative mind never rests, and I get so excited, sometimes too excited, to talk about MTC and how we take a show and make it a spectacle. With a mix of recognizable shows and new titles, this season promises to be one of pure excitement and escape for the entire family, while being the largest season we have ever produced. I know I said that last year, but with the overwhelmingly positive response to how we produce professional theatre, I have an obligation to you, our audience, to continue to set the bar higher for our engaging, enriching, and entertaining content. The record-breaking audience attendance in our 2023 season has allowed us to prepare for our most ambitious lineup of shows to date in the coming year. We are thrilled to continue to expand our audience as more and more people discover the Broadway caliber entertainment that Mountain Theatre Company delivers show after show. I feel certain 2024 will be another year of historic milestones as we launch our largest season yet. Our 86th season will kick off this summer with Grease, one of the most beloved Broadway and movie musicals of all time. The triple-threat talent we bring to Highlands requires a triple-threat show, and Grease is the biggest of them all! We have so much talent to showcase, and this show will feature them all with characters that our audiences have known and loved for decades. Get ready to jump back in time with Rydell High’s senior class of 1959 as we present the soundtrack of a generation with more flash and razzle-dazzle than you thought it could hold! July will bring a new Broadway classic to our stage with the musical comedy, Catch Me If You Can. Based on the hit film and incredible true story of Frank Abagnale, Jr., this splashy multi-Tony nominated spectacle follows the high-flying adventures of a globetrotting con artist and the FBI agent on his trail. This incredible new musical adventure will showcase what MTC does best with a sparkling ensemble of world class singers and dancers performing numbers that rival the Rockettes! In the fall, we are excited to introduce a new musical to our audiences. The Burnt Part Boys is a show that has been on my short list to produce at MTC since I arrived in Highlands in 2021. This inspiring Appalachian story of resilience is sure to resonate with audiences as this coming-of-age tale is told through beautiful staging and bluegrass music. We will wrap our 2024 season with the return of our annual holiday tradition, Home for the Holidays. This festive seasonal music revue promises dazzling costumes, high energy choreography, and is sure to fill audiences with plenty of good, old-fashioned holiday cheer! Highlands often feels like an oasis and escape from the outside world. This season speaks directly to that theme as we follow characters who are escaping from their past or towards their futures. Escape with us next season into a refuge of pure entertainment! On behalf of myself, the Board of Directors, and our entire staff, we greatly appreciate your support, and we are excited to bring you a season of world-class entertainment with triple threat talent and unmatched design. So without further ado (and I love some ado), prepare yourself for the spectacle that will be Mountain Theatre Company’s 2024 Mainstage Season!

GREASE

June 5 - 22

Book, Music, and Lyrics by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey

Grease is still the word! One of the most beloved musicals of all time hits the MTC stage in a high-octane production. Featuring all the hit songs you love, including “Summer Nights,” “Greased Lightnin’,” “You’re the One That I Want,” and “Hopelessly Devoted To You,” this multi-Tony winning musical has become a classic. Join Rydell High’s senior class of 1959 as they take you back to a time when drive-in movies, sock-hops, and tough talkin’ Pink Ladies defined a generation.  After a whirlwind summer romance, leather-clad greaser Danny and girl-next-door Sandy are unexpectedly reunited when she transfers to Rydell High for senior year. But can they survive the trials and tribulations of teenage life and find true love once more? Grease is presented by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc., a Concord Theatricals Company. www.concordtheatricals.com

CATCH ME IF YOU CAN

July 24 - August 10

Book by Terrence McNally Music by Marc Shaiman Lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman

This splashy spectacle follows the adventures of a globetrotting con artist. Portrayed onscreen by Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks, and based on the unbelievable true story of one of the most famous con artists in history, Frank Abagnale Jr., Catch Me If You Can is a rousing musical set during the jet-set age of the 1960s.

Seeking fame and fortune, precocious teenager, Frank, runs away from home to begin an unforgettable adventure. With nothing more than his boyish charm, a big imagination, and millions of dollars in forged checks, Frank successfully poses as a pilot, a doctor, and a lawyer over the course of several years – living the high life and winning the girl of his dreams. When Frank's lies catch the attention of FBI agent, Carl Hanratty, however, an epic chase across the globe ensues.

Catch Me If You Can is a big and bright musical with high-energy dance numbers and a riveting story. This high-flying musical comedy was nominated for four Tony awards, including Best Musical. The delightfully entertaining show was created by a Tony Award-winning "dream team," with a book by Terrence McNally (The Full Monty, Ragtime) and a swinging score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray). Catch Me If You Can is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. www.mtishows.com

THE BURNT PART BOYS

October 11 - 26

Book by Mariana Elder Music by Chris Miller Lyrics by Nathan Tysen

Siblings from a mining town learn the power of self-reliance in this Appalachian, bluegrass-inspired journey.

This musical, which took New York audiences and critics by storm in 2010, is one of the most imaginative and heart-felt original musicals in recent memory. Set in an Appalachian mining town that was the scene of a tragic disaster many years before, Pete is fighting to claim his past. His older brother Jake is hoping to forge a future. With their friends, they each embark on a life-altering journey to the mine that took their father’s life. By turns magical, inspiring, raucous, and playful – the story is set to a driving and haunting mid-century bluegrass-inspired score. The Burnt Part Boys is an empowering and thrilling theatrical experience for all ages. This heartwarming adventure will capture your heart as it finds the peaks of light and valleys of darkness within us all. The Burnt Part Boys is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. www.mtishows.com
