A WORD FROM OUR EXECUTIVE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

What a difference a year makes!

When I joined the Playhouse organization a year ago, we were rising from the ashes, both literally and figuratively.  A fire in the scene shop in 2019 was closely followed by the shuttering of performance venues and entertainment/theatre companies around the world due to the Covid-19 pandemic.  These two major events left our organization with nowhere to go but up.

With a little elbow grease, and a lot of faith, the resident theatre company at the Highlands Playhouse recovered to maintain our mission to Engage, Enrich, and Entertain the community and visitors of Western North Carolina.

Back in the Spring of 2021, I promised that a new era for our 83 year old theatre company was just on the horizon.  In a few short months we not only rebuilt, but expanded our season from three months of summer stock to a full calendar of live theatre - with an original production in the Fall, and for the first time in our history, a show celebrating the winter holidays.

Now, as we announce our 84th season, we also announce a new name for the resident company that has occupied our beloved Highlands Playhouse since the 1930's; Mountain Theatre Company.

The name may be new, but our purpose and passion remain the same as that of our original founders, “to serve as a gathering place for all who love live entertainment, whether it be the actors who make performing their passion, or the community that supports them". Our new name, and our 2022 Mainstage Season, focuses on that exact sentiment. The mountains are where we escape and embrace the wonders of nature. The theatre is where we escape and embrace the gifts and stories told by passionate artists. This spectacular selection of shows celebrates the gifts we have to give, the journey we take to share them, and the hands that guide us along the way. I speak for all of us at Mountain Theatre Company when saying; I hope you will join us on that journey and support the exciting future of live theatre in our community. I can't wait to share these stories with you.

On behalf of myself, the Board of Directors, and our entire staff, we greatly appreciate your support.

See you at the Playhouse!
